The significance of this was profound. Many scientists, including Einstein himself, had been disturbed at the idea (which arose both from general relativity and from observational evidence) that the universe was expanding, and had tried hard to find ways to avoid this conclusion. They did not like to believe that the universe was developing rather than static. And here was proof that, not only was it developing, but it must have had a definite starting point!
